18 Oct - SP5 Smith departed DT for promotion board. Good luck to SP5 Smith.
24 Oct - SSG Hess med evaced to PK, eyes.
31 Oct - SP5 Severance promoted to present grade. Congratulations to SP5 Severance.
2 Nov - SSG Hess returned to DT for duty.
4 Nov - MAJ Marti & SFC Welch visited DT to find out why ATC site had been omitted from the perimeter. This was discussed with MAJ Ostick the airfield commander and he assured MAJ Marti we would have adequate security. Our security consisted of 2 LP's to our front so we performed interior guard for more than one week. MAJ Marti & SFC Welch spent the night with us at DT. Entertainment was provided by Puff (the magic dragon) accompanied by AIE and F100 Playboys. Entertainment began at 1900 Hrs lasting until 0045 hours. Show was quite impressive and enjoyed by all.
6 Nov - Completed sand bagging of the sleeping quarters and everyone moved back in.
7 Nov - Continued sand bagging the bunker for better protection.
8 Nov - MAJ Smith, the Co XO, visited DT. He seemed pleased with site conditions and GCA run. MAJ Marti also arrived DT via helicopter to meet with the airfield commander, Avn Company Commanders concerned, and Air Force personnel about the ramp congestion between helicopters and C-130's. AF BG Wiles visited DT site with partial solutions and instructions in regards to ramp congestion.
9 Nov - MAJ Marti and MAJ Scott visited DT and the airfield commander to discuss and find a solution to the problem of gunships blowing headhunters off the ramp. At 1700 hours we received 10 to 15 mortar rounds. All landing approximately 300 meters north of the airfield. Everyone retired to the bunker.
10 Nov - SP5 Arnold departed DT for PK and onward movement to CONUS. We all wish him luck and happy landings in the good old USA. PFC Slaughter arrived at DT to replace SP5 Arnold. We all welcome his arrival at DT.
11 Nov - MAJ Marti and 1LT Dewitt visited DT bringing repair parts and supplies. They did not visit the site. 1640 Hrs Charlie sent his greetings via 8 rounds of mortar fire. SP4 Bartlett remained in the tower. All others retired to the bunker. No injuries or damage to 125th personnel or property. 1730 Hrs was rodeo time at DT. One OH-13 and one 1/4 ton jeep herded a water buffalo off the runway.
12 Nov - Received incoming mortar fire. Approximately 25 to 30 rounds landed on various areas in the northern section of the airfield. Twr remained open and manned by SP5 Ennis. Everyone else retired to the bunker. Mortar fire lasted from 1700 to 1845 Hrs. Out-going artillery broke the GRN/6 Bcn Antenna cable. Site operational 1915 hrs. No injuries or damage to 125th personnel or equipment. We are all beginning to think Charlie is angry at us.
13 Nov - 0730 Hrs Charles again sends his greeting, only 3 rounds. Everyone again retired to the bunker except SP4 Camacho who manned the tower. MAJ Marti visited DT. The site was a mess, thanks to Charles. Nothing was said by the MAJ. 1700 Hrs Charlie again sends in his greetings via mortar. Everyone again retired to the bunker except SP5 Severance who manned the tower.
14 Nov - 0830 Hrs Charlie again sends his greetings via mortar. Only two rounds. Everyone in the bunker except for SP5 Severance who manned the tower. No damage or injuries to 125th personnel or equipment. MAJ Marti visited DT concerning coordination of arrival and departure of VIP's.
15 Nov - 0840 Hrs Charles is on time. He again sends his greetings via incoming mortar. 12 to 15 rounds landed on the parking ramp where three C-130's were parked. Two of the C-130's were completely destroyed and the third damaged. Everyone except SP4 Camacho retired to the bunker and SP4 Camacho manned the tower. The C-130's that burned were loaded with ammo so it was a long stay in the bunker. At 1000 Hrs SP4 Bartlett relieved SP4 Camacho in the tower. C-130's stopped burning about 1230 Hrs. 1545 Hrs, Charlie again sends his greeting via mortar to DT. This time he hit the ASP setting fire to it resulting in complete loss of ASP at DT. Again everyone retired to the bunker except SP5 Ennis who manned the tower until complete 105MM projectiles started sailing by. At that time tower was ordered evacuated. The ASP burned fiercely until 0130 hrs and an occasional round exploded throughout the night so most of the night was spent in very close proximity of the bunker. Charles also sent his greeting several times during the night. Unreported weather today was 1141 tons of various types of ammunition. I believe this was a local storm in the DT area. Damage to the site was not too heavy. One tower window was blown out, 3/4 ton had one headlight broken, tent has 8 or 10 holes in it, elevation antenna has 1/2" diameter hole, front of wooden hootch partially blown in and everyone's personal gear was in a mess. No injuries to personnel.
16 Nov - 0940 Hrs again Charlie calls on DT via mortars. Again everyone retires to the bunker excpet SP5 Ennis who manned the tower. That bunker sure is beginning to seem like living quarters. MAJ Marti visited DT with two personnel from KT to view Charlie's work. On this date DT site had a fire truck presented to the site and SP5 Smith became fire marshall of DT with PFC Short and SP4 Martin assisting him. PFC Scott departed for KT to lend assistance in the tower for a few days. It took him only two or three minutes to pack a bag and he left smiling. So, I think he welcomed the upcoming change and rest.
17 Nov - Last night Charlie must have taken a well earned rest as he failed to send his greetings our way. We also took a much needed rest and got som sleep for a change. MAJ Marti visited the site bringing SFC Welch, 1LT Dewitt to view Charlie's work. He also brought repair parts and supplies. All in all, today was rather quiet and we managed to get a little work done on the site. A CH-47 was coming in with one engine out but before landing he achieved a restart and continued to PK.
18 Nov - Charlie still resting. We're back to normal operations. C-130's landing one at a time and off loading on the west end is a little slower but it doesn't give Charlie as large a target.
19 Nov - Another quiet day and continued normal operations. Tower remained open until 0330 to assist with rescue missions flown by the Air Force.
20 Nov - No mortars - continued normal operations. GCA tech reps visited DT and examined and removed parts from GCA SN 009. 0030 Hrs SP5 Smith and myself became cargo masters. We donated our 3/4 ton truck and muscles to help unload C-130's until 0200 hrs. SFC Rushing from USARV Air Traffic Control visited DT along with the tech reps to view our ATC procedures, facilities and also asked about any problems we may have. He seemed pleased with site and procedures. Invited tech reps to stay but they declined. Don't blame them any.
21 Nov - Installed 155 MM ammo canisters for Runway lights to replace the 55 gal. drums. Continued normal operations. 1920 Hrs Charlie hasn't forgotten us as he again sends his greetings via mortar or 75 MM. A few rounds fell close to the perimeter on the north side. Hope Charlie sleeps early as the men and I don't much feel like staying in the bunker all night.
22 Nov - MAJ Marti came to DT bringing parts, supplies and two PIO men from 1st Avn Bde who spent the afternoon with us. They wanted information to write an article about Avn support for the operations in DT area. Charles rested this night as we didn't hear from him.
